5-A-Day My Ass

These are crepes again along with maple butter cream that I can't seem to get enough of. The crepes and creme are from Dreena's upcoming book, and wow, they are good. They are made of whole wheat spelt and have 5 types of fruits to go in and on them. I want to mention that simply pureeing foods, such as fruits and veggies, offers a person to cram so much more good stuff into the diet without eating more bulk or at least it mentally seems so. For example, what you see here is more than 1c of each type of fruit, simply pureed down for faster and easier consumption. Plus, that type of presentation goes well with crepes. And don't forget hiding greens in other meals, simply chop them super fine so they are mixed in.

Thinking about people counting and cramming in fiber and good stuff, made me think of that one ridiculous commercial where the woman wakes up in the middle of the night and chomps into a raw bunch of broccoli and then goes back to bed. Come on, after all, she needs at least 25 grams of fiber in her diet daily. Then she wakes early before the alarm, and continues to eat raw veggies while getting dressed and driving to work. She is desperately trying to squeeze in some raw carrots while at her desk at work. Then this crazy lady is even eating raw veggies while walking on the treadmill later in the day. Doesn't she eat meals? Or is it assumed that she is not eating any good foods (drive-thru burger and fries on her way home from the gym?!) and that she needs to spend free moments (and not-so-free) gorging away at raw produce?!
Wait... the point of the whole commercial... there's a pill for all that. Just take a few pills a day because after all, it is "so hard to get fiber in the diet" and continue to eat a bunch of crap instead of eating whole colorful, and fiber-containing, among other things-foods.

I decided not to rant about this (politics, obesity, socioeconomic issues, NSLP, etc), so here I am providing you with my "more than 5-a-day" from a vegan with a nutrition degree. And all in one meal, all on one plate (smoothies take care of this too!). All organic, some of it local: I present to you, Dreena's wonderful spelt crepes with maple butter creme (coming up in her 3rd book), and I served it with local gala apples, peaches that were frozen, frozen strawberries, a fresh banana and always-frozen-blueberries. All more than 1c of fruit each, pureed and gobbled up (divided by two servings). It is so simple and quick and easy to get so much fruit/veggies/good stuff if you simply puree it (starting from whole form not adding anything. Agave nectar is ok, but not necessary).

What a gorgeous picture! Wow.
Making frozen fruit purees to eat like ice cream is something I often do in the summer. I am definitely going to make crepes with fruit sauce next!

You crack me up! Although in reality its really sad to think about the typical eating habits of most Americans. Unfortunately we are a society dominated by fast food and grease, with a low intake of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables.

And don't even get me started on TV commercials. I swear they are the reason I don't watch TV. Another thing that drives me crazy is when people tell me that they don't eat a lot of fruit and vegetables because they are too expensive- (yet they can fork up the costs of meat and fast food)! UGH!

Your crepes look absoultely delicious and easily provide more than 5 a day.

I can't even imagine depending on a daily pill to provide my daily fiber and nutrition. NASTY (oh and I'm sure there's absolutely no side effects).

Why can't more people eat/think this way?

Beautiful, beautiful crepes! I will never understand why anyone would not eat something like this. I get 5 a day every lunch, so I must end up with 10 a day!

*DROOL, DROOL*

I can't believe there are people in this world who don't get 5 a day. It's so easy--and lovely--to do when you're vegan. I feel thankful.

I think I'm at something like 35 a day... Hehe...

Those crepes look BEAUTIFUL! Almost too pretty to eat. Almost...

So yeah, I've seen that commercial with that woman and the broccoli, et al. It cracks me up because people tell me that it makes them think of me, as I attack anything green in my presence.

Oh! I think I already commented here, but wonder if blogger ate it because I don't see it! Lol!!

Anyhow, I came back to thank you for the great comment you left. I did laugh that you thought it was a personal lecture to you! Lol!! lots of people felt that it was to them too. Lol! Although, I *did* think of your beautiful necklaces. :P :) I'd love to see you get that up and running! They are beautiful.

I came across your site en route to something completely different and the pic of yummy crepes looked yummy and stopped me in my tracks - I don't usually post on blogs of people I don't know, but yesterday we launched all our vegan recipes out into the internet ethers to help make it easy for anyone to eat meat/product free - and if any are of use to you, then be our guest to dip in and try. You'll find them at http://www.damefandango.com/vhomepage.htm under the 'free recipes' and 'menu ideas' toolbars. There is a book's worth on there and people could donate to the designated charity if they wish, but it isn't mandatory and the recipes can all be freely accessed. Right - off to try and remember what the heck I came online to do! Sending warmest wishes, Scarlett

Somehow I missed that commercial (maybe because I don't have TV...), but it's really bothersome! Americans seem to just continue to be encouraged in their sorry eating habits--now just add supplements so that you can still "feel" healthy about it all! I could rant about this too, but I won't do it in your comments...

What a lovely creation! I loooove fruit-filled crepes, and all that pureed fruit sauce is really exciting! This might be the best looking sweet thing I've ever seen you post (and that's saying a whole lot, I promise)!

That looks unbelievably delicious. I'm always so scared to make crepes because I always fear they'll end up a royal mess. My pans aren't as non stick as they used to be. *sigh*

... Maybe I'll just go to your house for crepes :) ... or stick to pancakes LOL

LOVE this post. I'm glad i don't have a TV that gets stations of any kind; that commercial would annoy me and frustrate me. But it's so America... let's fix everything with a PILL, doggone it. *sigh*

Those crepes are insanely wonderous and gorgeous and i'm sure soooooooo freaking good!

How are you, Leslie!?
